IKEA Pendant Light Review: Cheap Ceiling Glow-Up?

A dated ceiling fitting — that sad bare bulb or builder's globe — drags a whole room down, and the fix is often cheaper than people think. IKEA's pendant shades start at pocket-money prices, so I bought a popular one, wired it in over my dining table, and lived with it to see whether a budget pendant can really give a ceiling a proper glow-up.

The Order & Arrival

Classic IKEA: tidy flat packaging, everything intact, no plastic excess. The shade and the basic cord set arrived in perfect order. As always, IKEA's packaging is a quiet strength — it protects without waste, and nothing turned up dented or scratched. A reassuring start.

Installing It

Assembling the pendant itself is a two-minute job. The actual install, though, is wiring it into the ceiling — the same as fitting any pendant, so you need basic electrical confidence or an electrician. If you can already swap a light fitting, you'll be fine; if not, budget for a sparky. The cord set is basic but does the job.

Living With It

With a warm bulb in, the result genuinely surprised me — over the table it looks considered and far more expensive than it was, casting a lovely pool of warm light. The better IKEA shades have real shape and presence, and visitors haven't once guessed the price. For a tired ceiling, it's a transformation that costs less than dinner out.

The Bulb & Shade Tricks

Two things make or break it. First, the bulb: skip whatever's suggested if it's cool-toned and put in a warm 2700K, which instantly makes the light cozy rather than clinical. Second, the shade choice: the sculptural and woven styles look genuinely high-end, while the plainest ones can read a bit basic. Choose the shade carefully and the cheap pendant looks anything but.

What's Good & What's Not

Good: outstanding value, real transformation, and some genuinely stylish shades. Not so good: the cord sets and fittings are basic, you'll want to change the bulb, and it needs proper installation. And it's a glow-up, not a showpiece — for a true statement pendant with more character and quality, it's worth looking at a dedicated pendant lighting range. But pound for pound, IKEA is hard to beat.

Who It's For

Anyone wanting to rescue a dated ceiling on a budget who's comfortable with (or can pay for) basic wiring. Pick a sculptural shade, add a warm bulb, and you'll get a designer-ish glow-up for pennies. If you're after a true centrepiece, spend more elsewhere — but for sheer value, the humble IKEA pendant delivers a remarkable amount.

The bottom line

An IKEA pendant is one of the cheapest ways to transform a tired ceiling, and the better shades genuinely look the part. Add a warm bulb, accept the basic cord set, and you've got a designer-ish glow-up for pennies. For a true statement piece, look higher — but for value, it's hard to beat.

Are IKEA pendant lights good?

The better shades are genuinely good value — they look far more expensive than they are and transform a dated ceiling for very little. The cord sets and fittings are basic, and you'll want a warm bulb, but choose a nice shade and an IKEA pendant punches well above its price.

Are IKEA pendant lights easy to install?

The pendant itself is simple to assemble, but it still needs wiring into your ceiling fitting, which means either confidence with basic electrics or an electrician. The fitting part is the same as any pendant. If you're not comfortable with wiring, factor in a sparky's visit.

Do IKEA pendants come with a bulb?

Often not, or with a cooler bulb than ideal — so budget a few pounds for a warm 2700K bulb, which makes a huge difference to how cozy and expensive the light looks. The bulb is the cheapest, highest-impact upgrade you can make to any IKEA pendant.

Is an IKEA pendant a good statement light?

For value, it's great, and some shades have real presence — but if you want a true designer statement piece to anchor a room, you'll find more character and quality further up the market. Treat IKEA as a brilliant budget glow-up rather than a showpiece and you'll be delighted.
