Nanoleaf's glowing geometric wall panels are pure internet catnip — those colour-shifting triangles and hexagons look spectacular in every photo. But spectacular-in-photos and worth-it-in-real-life are different things, so I bought a starter set with my own money, stuck them up, and lived with them to see if they're more than a one-night novelty.
The Order & Arrival
The set arrived on time and well packaged, panels individually protected with the mounting bits and connectors clearly laid out. Nothing was cracked, which matters with flat panels. The unboxing was tidy and the kit felt considered, if immediately a reminder that you're paying premium prices for a fairly small number of panels.
Mounting Them
This is the part to think hard about. The panels connect with little linkers and stick to the wall with adhesive pads — which hold well, but make your layout semi-permanent and put your paint at risk if you ever reposition them. I sketched my layout on paper first, which I'd strongly recommend, because once they're up, moving them isn't casual. On a freshly painted wall, proceed carefully.
The Wow Factor
Once lit, they genuinely deliver. The colours are rich, the animations are smooth, and the app is good fun — you can paint scenes, sync to music, and the effect on a wall is every bit as striking as online. Visitors notice immediately. As glowing wall art that you can reprogram on a whim, nothing else quite matches the look. This is what you're buying, and it lives up to it.
The Practical Reality
Here's the honest part. They're atmosphere, not illumination — wonderful for mood and as a feature, but not how you'd actually light a room to read or work. And they're expensive: the starter set is just a start, and a wall-filling layout adds up fast. In my traditional living room they felt slightly out of place; I suspect they're happiest in a studio, home office, gaming setup, or a teenager's dream bedroom.
What's Good & What's Not
Good: genuinely beautiful, fun to control, a real conversation piece. Not so good: pricey, adhesive-mounted and semi-permanent, and not practical as main lighting. You're buying an effect, and it's a gorgeous one — just go in clear that it's décor that glows, not a lamp.
Who It's For
People who want a genuine feature wall in the right kind of room and don't mind paying for the look. If that's you, they're a delight. If you want everyday lighting or a flexible, movable setup, your money goes further elsewhere. For me they were stunning but not quite right for the room — a beautiful thing I admired more than I needed.
Nanoleaf panels are as stunning in person as online, and the app is fun, but they're expensive and the adhesive mounting makes them semi-permanent. Brilliant in a studio, office, or teen's room as a feature wall; harder to justify as everyday lighting in a traditional living room.
